Development Stages - from the Idea to the first Event after the Games

  • 28 October 1965: Willi Daume, President of the National Olympic Committee, suggested to Lord Mayor Dr. Hans-Jochen Vogel that Munich should bid for the Olympic Games 1972.
  • 30 December 1965: Munich's application is submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne. Other applicants besides Munich are Detroit, Montreal and Madrid.
  • 26 April 1966: The IOC awarded the XX Olympic Games 1972 to Munich.
  • 10 July 1967: The Federal German Finance Minister Dr. h. c. Franz-Josef Strauss, the Bavarian Finance Minister Dr. Konrad Pöhner and the Lord Mayor Dr. Hans-Jochen Vogel signed the consortium contract for construction and financing of the sports facilities and equipment for the Olympic Games 1972.
  • 13 October 1967: The jury (100 suggestions had been received) awarded the first prize to Behnisch & Partner.
  • 9 June 1969: The construction work for the Olympic stadium, the Olympic hall and the Olympic swimming centre was begun on the Oberwiesenfeld.
  • 14 July 1969: The foundation stone for the XX Olympic Games 1972 in Munich was laid down in a symbolic celebration on 14 July 1969.
  • 23 July 1970: The topping-out ceremony was celebrated after completion of the shell construction for the Olympic stadium, hall and swimming centre and the ZHS, the university sports facilities.
  • 4 November 1971: Earlier than expected, the most important topping-out ceremony was celebrated on the Oberwiesenfeld. The cable net for the tent roof was pulled up and then covered in parts.
  • 21 April 1972: The last of the 9 sq.m. acrylic glass plates was fastened to the roof of the Olympic stadium.
  • 26 Mai 1972: The Olympic stadium was officially opened with the international football match between Germany and the USSR.
  • 26 August 1972: The XX Olympic Games were opened.
  • 11 September 1972: Closing ceremony
  • 17 September 1972: Six days after the closing ceremony the first post-Olympic event (called "Ein Platz an der Sonne") was staged in the Olympic hall.
