The German Rugby Association (DRV), the City of Munich and Olympiapark München GmbH are organising a highlight of the 2017 sporting year: at the “Oktoberfest 7s” rugby spectacular, the world's best teams from Australia, South Africa and England will face each other during the Wiesn period. Tickets are available now from www.muenchenticket.de

Munich Sport City will become Germany’s rugby capital this autumn: more than 3,000 fans from all over the world are expected to attend on Friday and Saturday, 29 and 30 September 2017, for the rugby mega-event “Oktoberfest 7s” in the Olympic Stadium. The extremely fast and appealing version of rugby (match duration: 2 x 7 minutes) has already wowed audiences at the Olympics in Rio in 2016 and attracted record TV viewing figures. Internationally, rugby is a one of the most popular sports and a sport with one of the highest numbers of spectators.

In the "Oktoberfest 7s”, Germany’s national team will face the world’s best teams from Australia, South Africa and England. “It will be a highlight of a very special class”, says DRV Association President Klaus Blank, alerting Munich residents to this incredible event. “Rugby and the Oktoberfest fit beautifully together, because fun meets robust sport with a high entertainment and experience value.” In the Olympic Stadium, a new pitch has been laid especially for the rugby event in order to create the best possible conditions for athletes from all over the world. “We are absolutely delighted that we've been able to christen the new pitch in the Olympic Stadium with such a high-end sporting event. Rugby is the perfect complement to the Olympic Park’s portfolio, because we are always looking out for unusual events for our visitors,” says Olympic Park boss Arno Hartung.

German rugby has already moved back into the international spotlight thanks to its most recent outings. Global association executive Mark Egan has seen a significant increase in performance in German rugby. The Head of Competitions and Performance has certainly not failed to notice that the German public loves rugby. “The TV viewing figures for the 2015 World Championship and the 2016 Olympics in Rio were remarkable.” As a result, Egan supported Munich’s bid to host the internationally renowned tournament, which will bring many new fans and members to rugby in Germany.

To enable rugby fans to order or give tickets for Christmas, the organisers have joined forces with their ticketing partner München Ticket to ensure that tickets for the "Oktoberfest 7s” are available right now. Tickets are available from Euro 19 for Friday, 29 September and from Euro 29 for Saturday, 30 September.

The professional Oktoberfest 7s tournament is being supported by the long-established amateur tournament of the Munich RFC, which has been played for 38 years now. The venue for this tournament has not yet been confirmed.

Information about 7s rugby: 7s rugby is the fast version of rugby, which was included as a new Olympic sport in Rio in 2016. At the games in Brazil, this appealing form of rugby, which is played with seven players on the full-sized rugby pitch, created some real highlights for the spectators. Both internationally and nationally, the broadcasts generated phenomenal viewing figures. The matches attracted several million viewers at around midnight, as well as market shares of more than 25 per cent. 7s rugby is played in two-day tournaments. Matches last 7 minutes, twice, and finals last 10 minutes, twice. In Rio 2016, Fiji won the final against Great Britain in the men’s 7s rugby and claimed Fiji’s first Olympic medal.
