The Munich Marathon offers a varied sporting programme: the marathon and half-marathon are the main sporting events, whilst the 10 km run and the marathon relay are designed as entry-level and team events. The programme is complemented by children’s, school and community runs covering various distances. Last year, 28,500 participants took to the starting line, whilst around 150,000 spectators lining the route created a special atmosphere. The route connects Munich’s most famous landmarks, taking in both urban and green sections. It runs from the Olympic Park via Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz and the Siegestor to the English Garden and the Werksviertel.
New formats
A particular highlight is the new Dallmayr Coffee Run, which replaces the previous Friendship Run. The essence of the event remains unchanged: the focus is on community, inclusion and the joy of exercising together. With its new name, the run also taps into a trend that is shaping the running scene worldwide – because whether it’s a running club, a community run or a running event, for many people, having a coffee together after the run has long been an integral part of the experience. The 4.2-kilometre run combines exercise with social engagement. All entry fees and voluntary donations go towards social projects.
Focus on young athletes
The youth programme is also being further strengthened. In cooperation with the Bavarian Athletics Association and the “Lauf dich fit!” initiative, the Kids Run on Saturday will once again offer a choice of three age-appropriate distances: 400 metres, 2.1 kilometres and 4.2 kilometres. The 1st Munich School Run will take place in the Olympic Park as early as Friday. The event is aimed at pupils from all primary and secondary schools and is supported, amongst others, by the Department for Education and Sport of the City of Munich. This expands the Munich Marathon to include an additional running programme for schools. With both these initiatives, the Munich Marathon is broadening its reach in the youth sector even further and creating additional opportunities for children and young people across the city to take up running.
Alongside the sporting competitions, participants and visitors can look forward to a varied programme of events. In the Olympic Park, the Runners Festival by Brooks will be the centrepiece of the weekend, featuring exhibitors from the worlds of sport, health and lifestyle, hands-on activities and food and drink stalls. Along the route, live music, volunteers, cheering points and thousands of fans will create the marathon’s unique atmosphere. The event brings people from more than 100 nations to Munich, transforming the city into an international hub for the running community for a weekend.
