Open Monuments Day® 2026

Munich’s Olympic Park is set to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On Sunday 13 September 2026, as part of the nationwide Open Monuments Day®, the association Aktion Welterbe Olympiapark e.V., together with numerous partners, will highlight the exceptional significance of this globally unique ensemble of architecture, landscape and social vision, and explain why its preservation is a shared responsibility. Under the title ‘The Olympic Park for Everyone – The Open Monument’, visitors can look forward to a varied, free programme featuring guided tours, discussions, exhibitions, films, music and hands-on activities.

The programme brings the Olympic Park to life as an outstanding cultural monument of international standing. This total work of art symbolises Munich’s and the Federal Republic of Germany’s transition towards an open, peaceful and forward-looking society. It combines architecture, landscape, ecology, sport, culture and history within a public space that the people of Munich can experience together and reflect upon.

This exceptional universal significance forms the basis for the proposed designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Open Monument Day® aims to inspire the city’s community to embrace this. After all, World Heritage thrives on people’s engagement with their cultural heritage and their willingness to take responsibility for its future.

From architecture to biodiversity
Free guided tours offer the chance to discover the Olympic Park from a variety of perspectives: experts explain the landscape architecture, ecological features and biodiversity, highlight the pioneering structural engineering of the roofs, and provide insights into the architecture of the Olympic Park and the Olympic Village. The memorial to the 1972 Olympic attack and the history of the park are also covered. A varied film programme of short and feature-length films at forum2 in the Olympic Village also brings together a wide range of perspectives on the Olympic Park under one roof – from 1972 to the present day and beyond.
