Phantom of the Opera

The musical success

Small Olympic Hall

This grand touring production of *The Phantom of the Opera* is far more than a traditional musical adaptation. An opulent reinterpretation of the world-famous story is unfolding on stages across Germany – starring international star Deborah Sasson and musical theatre icon Uwe Kröger in the lead roles.

The production was awarded the ‘Golden Sun 2023’ for Best Musical in recognition of its artistic quality, masterful musical arrangement and spectacular set design. Since 2010, this version by the writing duo Deborah Sasson and Jochen Sautter has been delighting an ever-growing audience and deliberately adding new dimensions to the well-known story.

Closer to the original novel – more intense, more dramatic, more emotional

Unlike many well-known musical adaptations, this production draws more heavily on Gaston Leroux’s original novel. This results in a deeper, psychologically more nuanced portrayal of the characters – particularly the Phantom, whose inner conflict between love, obsession and despair is brought to life in a truly compelling way.

The music, composed by Deborah Sasson, combines great emotion with operatic richness of sound. Well-known operatic quotes are artfully woven into the score in places, lending the production a special musical depth. The British award-winning composer Ryan Martin, who has worked for Cirque du Soleil, Netflix, the BBC, ABC, CBS and Fox, among others, was brought on board for the arrangements.

Two world-class voices in a passionate duel of emotions

Deborah Sasson is one of the world’s most renowned sopranos and captivates audiences with her extraordinary expressiveness and stage presence. Her portrayal of Christine is powerful, sensitive and moving all at once. Uwe Kröger, often described as Germany’s number one musical star, lends the Phantom a haunting, charismatic depth. His performance combines vocal virtuosity with emotional intensity – a Phantom caught between genius and tragedy. Together, they create an atmosphere that captivates from the very first note and draws the audience into the mysterious catacombs of the Paris Opera.

Three-dimensional video projections and world-class stage design

The set design combines state-of-the-art 3D video technology with elaborately constructed stage elements. The visual effects are the work of the internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Daniel Stryjecki. These are complemented by set designs by Michael Scott, who has previously worked for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The result is a stunning illusion of light, depth and movement – from sumptuous opera scenes to the mysterious vaults beneath the theatre. The combination of music, lighting design and technology transforms every scene into an atmospheric total work of art.

Love, jealousy and dark passion beneath the rooftops of Paris

At the centre of the story is Christine, a young chorus girl who unexpectedly steps in for the ailing prima donna at a gala evening – and captivates the audience. Behind her rise to vocal stardom, however, lies a dark secret: her teacher is the mysterious Phantom, who lives hidden beneath the opera house.

Driven by an obsessive love for Christine, he manipulates events from the shadows. At the same time, the aristocrat Raoul is courting her. When the Phantom realises he has a rival, the situation escalates dramatically – a kidnapping to the opera house’s underground chambers leads to the emotional climax of the story. The musical combines intense emotions, dramatic tension and haunting music to create an evening full of suspense and passion.
