At the end of the Champions League preliminary round, the top 16 teams were assigned to the knockout round according to their table position (1st against 16th, 2nd against 15th, etc.). Accordingly, the tenth-placed team from Munich will meet the seventh-placed team from Geneva.
While it is already the eighth knockout round appearance in a row for the German champions, the Swiss had to wait nine years until they too finally reached a play-off round again. Both teams will meet for the first time in the CHL.
If they reach the quarter-finals, the Red Bulls can look forward to a rematch of last season's DEL final between Munich and Ingolstadt. In order to make this duel a reality, however, not only must the Munich team eliminate the Swiss champions, but Ingolstadt must also knock out the Swedish title holders, the Växjö Lakers. The third German representative Adler Mannheim will face Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in the CHL Round of 16.
