When talking about the most successful bands of the 1980s and 1990s, there’s no getting round Simple Minds. With a total of 20 albums, several of which reached number one, over 60 million records sold and their global smash hit “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, the Scottish band have cemented their place in history and are now an indispensable part of any 80s playlist. Following hit singles such as “Alive And Kicking”, “Belfast Child” and “Let There Be Love”, as well as nine further successful albums released after the turn of the millennium, the band – fronted by singer Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill – still enjoys legendary status worldwide, almost 50 years after its formation.
This is the story of a band that is undoubtedly one of the most popular and renowned live acts in the world. Joining the celebrations as special guests will be the British band Level 42, who scored a number one hit in this country in 1986 with “Lessons in Love”, which spent 20 weeks in the German singles charts. ‘Running in the Family’, Level 42’s hit album, will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year.
It didn’t take long for Simple Minds to enjoy their first successes after forming in 1977. The Glasgow-based band made their debut in 1979 with the albums *Life In A Day* and *Real to Real Cacophony*, and quickly achieved their first national chart successes. In the following two years, they released two further albums and achieved their international breakthrough in 1982 with their fifth LP, *New Gold Dream*. What followed was the band’s most successful period, during which they became one of the most successful Scottish bands of their time with their platinum-certified number-one albums *Sparkle In the Rain* (1984), ‘Once Upon a Time’ (1985) and ‘Street Fighting Years’ (1989), establishing them as one of the most successful Scottish bands of their time. This success continued into the 1990s with “Real Life” (1991) and “Good News from the Next World”. During this period, Simple Minds explored just about every musical genre – from post-punk and new wave to rock and modern synth-pop – and incorporated them into their music.
Undeterred by a number of line-up changes over the years, the band continued to enjoy great success in the 2000s and cemented their status as one of the most successful Scottish bands of all time. Their latest albums, *Walk Between Worlds* (2018) and *Direction Of The Heart* (2022), finally saw Simple Minds return to the German Top 10 and the Top 5 of the UK album charts. 2027 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the band’s early days, underlining Simple Minds’ exceptional standing and their consistency over the years. Even singer Jim Kerr isn’t entirely sure where the musicians find the energy to carry on after all these years, as he admitted in a 2025 interview with Classic Pop Magazine: “But it’s a trait of mine, so to speak – to just keep going.”
