14th Dragon boat race

Competition on the Olympic lake

Olympic Park Munich

Who will be ‘Master of the Olympic Lake’? Find out at the 14th Dragon boat race between TUM and LMU on the Olympic Lake.

Any student group, institute, department or office of either university can register a boat. The boats and helmsman are provided and training facilities are also available. You need 16 paddlers and 1 drummer for your boat.

First, the LMU and TUM student boats will compete for the title of ‘Master of the Olympic Lake Students’. Then the races start with your boat. Four boats paddle twice in a row for the best time. After seven heats, the eight fastest boats are selected for the two semi-finals. The two fastest boats from each semi-final will compete against each other in the final.

Before the final at around 19:30, there is the LMU vs TU professors' race for the title of ‘Master of the Olympic Lake Professors’. After that comes the final and the fastest team can rightly call themselves ‘Master of the Olympic Lake’.

The course runs through the entire Olympic Lake and is 250 metres long. This means full power for 1 ½ to 2 minutes. The centre of the race is on the meadow in front of the swimming stadium. You can sit down there for a picnic and watch the race until it's your turn.

Awards are given not only to the fastest boats, but also to the three most original teams. Think of a motto, a boat name, a costume or maybe even a show.
