In December 2023, it was included on Germany’s tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status. On 7 June, as part of a special event day, Munich residents are invited to explore the park in more detail on two extended tours of the grounds aboard the park railway, whilst learning interesting background information about the creation of the Olympic Park. An extensive programme for children and young people will accompany the event, including a guided tour for young people on the theme of ‘Democracy and the 1972 Olympic Games’.
The two-hour ride on the park railway takes visitors along the Olympic Lake, past the Olympic buildings and on to the Olympic Village. Experts, eyewitnesses from 1972 and committed members of the public will be on hand to provide information about the past, present and future of the Olympic Park, including City Planning Councillor Elisabeth Merk and Fritz Auer, one of the key ‘Olympic architects’.
The event is a joint initiative of the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations, Münchner Forum e.V., the association Aktion Welterbe e.V., Olympic Park GmbH and the association Gegen Vergessen – Für Demokratie e.V.
The event day in the Olympic Park is being held to mark UNESCO World Heritage Day.
To book places on the park railway tours, which take place at 10.30 am and 2.00 pm, or the youth tour, and for further information on the World Heritage process, here.
