In 2007 Munich will once again celebrate a large athletics fest. For the second time since 1997, the best eight women’s and men’s teams will meet in the grand finale of the SPAR European Cup in the Olympic Stadium in Munich.
"We are extremely fortunate to be able to offer track and field fans and guests of the Olympic Park an event of this magnitude on the 23rd and 24th of June 2007, in succession to the large and successful athletics meetings of past years, especially the European Athletics Championships in 2002", says Wilfrid Spronk, general manager of the Olympiapark München GmbH.
In fact, the Olympic Stadium has proved to be an optimal venue and the public both enthused and informed, be it for the SPAR European Cup in 1997, the IAAF Grand Prix Final in 1999 or the Athletics Team Challenge in 2004. Post-Olympic track and field history was crowned by the European Athletics Championships in 2002. The atmosphere was absolutely overwhelming. The Olympic Stadium, the Park and the entire city were gripped by athletics fever. Over 300,000 spectators and Europe's best athletes celebrated an internationally unsurpassable sports fest.
Amongst the more than 9420 sports, cultural and commercial events, with over 92 million spectators - including 30 World, 12 European and 90 German Championships - were many other track and field highlights that provided unparalleled experiences for both athletes and guests.
Olympic flair and optimal conditions have continually motivated the world's best athletes to attain outstanding results. The Munich Olympic Park stands for three decades of sport, entertainment and recreation. It is synonymous with top events, leisure sports and relaxation, and is a tourist magnet. In addition to international and national competitions, spectacular concerts with rock, pop and classical stars, large congresses and exhibits complete the chronicle of events. On the other end of the spectrum are the leisure sports, recreational and tourist attractions that Olympic facilities such as the Olympic Swimming Pool, the Olympic Ice Sports Centre, the Olympic Tower or Visitors' Service have in store for guests. More than 71 million visitors - local, national and international - have made use of the facilities to date.
